In an age of unending war for access to oil, we, the activists of FrontAIDS want to call your attention to another war: a war which has been going on for decades, a war which has already taken tens of millions of lives, a war has already affected every continent, a war which come to symbolize indifference and negligence of those in power, a war of marauders on the battlefield of humanity suffering from infectious diseases such as HIV, viral hepatitis, TB and Malaria –
The global HIV/AIDS epidemic is over 20 years old, and today over 40 million people are living with the virus. No region unaffected by the pandemic. Of the millions of people who are in urgent need of life-saving antiretroviral therapy less than 5% receive it. Over 500 million people have hepatitis and treatment is available to less than 1% of them. Tuberculosis takes the lives of over 5000 people every day. Many die from a form of the virus which is resistant to medicines developed 50 years ago and new medicines are not accessible due to their high price. People are dieing from lack of access to drugs and from a lack of understanding that their deaths are in part caused by patents which limit their access to drugs. These patents defend the intellectual property of pharmaceutical companies enabling them to make billions of dollars, and make the deaths of millions of people a matter of “international patent law” rather than a crime.
What is HIV for the pharmaceutical companies???
People infected with the human immunodeficiency virus can be treated with supportive therapy which does not cure and requires them to take the medicines for the rest of their lives. The prices of these medicines are set by transnational pharmaceutical companies. The corporations are interested iin the growth of the epidemic throughout the world as market for their products. They are not interested in the appearance on the market of curative medicines for fear of loosing their gigantic, constantly growing market. The cost of the medicines themselves accounts for less than 5% of their market price and the rest comes from their patent rights on the drugs. The drugs themselves are often developed with governmental funds. The actions of pharmaceutical companies are protected by patent rights. People are dyeing from lack of drugs knowing that their deaths are defended by patents, patents on drugs which they cannot receive due to high prices. Patents which defend the intellectual property rights of pharmaceutical and enable them to make billions of dollars, patents which make the deaths of millions of people a matter of international patent law rather than a war crime.
We, people affected by epidemics call the world community to fight an EVIL which is worse than the viruses, an EVIL which violates humanitarian values, an EVIL which uses the human body for its commercial interests. We call the world community to fight the oligarchic clan of a few dozen unprincipled businessmen, and to fight the current patent system in the area of treatment of infectious diseases.
We demand that patents on medicines be taken from pharmaceutical companies and used for the good of humanity.
We demand an international investigation and trial for crimes against humanity of the top level managers of those corporations the actions of which are creating barriers to access to treatment of infectious diseases like HIV, hepatitis, tuberculosis and malaria. June 14 is a day of united action against G8 policies. We call global networks of people to fight the spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and all people who care about the future to support direct action demonstrations against the transnational pharmaceutical companies.
