Yaniv (Nev) Schulman New York’ta yaşayan bir fotoğraf sanatçısıdır. Sinemacı kardeşi Ariel Schulman ve onun ortağı Henry Joost’la aynı ofisi paylaşırlar. Catfish, ağabey Ariel Schulman ve arkadaşı Henry Joost’un, New York’taki ofislerinde günlük hayatlarını sürekli filme çekmeleriyle başlamış olan bir proje. Fotoğrafçı kardeş Nev Schulman, aynı ofiste sıradan hayatlarını sürdürdükleri günler içerisinde öncelikle fiziksel posta yoluyla hediyesini aldığı Abby’le, daha sonra da ailesiyle tanışıyor; ve Facebook üzerinden gerçekleşen bu kilobyte temelli ilişki, Nev’in ailenin büyük kızı Megan’a aşık olmasıyla devam ediyor. Bu noktada gerçekten çığrından çıkmış bir belgeselle (ki Ariel Schulman da bunu gerek film içinde, gerekse söyleşilerde dile getiriyor; bunları kaydetmeyeceği takdirde büyük bir fırsatı kaçıracağını söylüyor) karşıkarşıya kalıyoruz, Nev, Megan ile telefonda da görüşüyor, fotoğraflarını kendi fotoğraflarına montajlıyor, sevgi sözcükleri gerek telefon, gerekse internet üzerinden yürüyor.
Catfish, sosyal hayatın sadece klavyede gezinen parmaklara indirgendiği günümüzde, işin varabileceği en uç noktaları göstermek niyetinde ve neredeyse kendimizi adadığımız iletişim ağlarına bir eleştiri mahiyetinde.
Everything on Facebook has an intended audience, broad or narrow, the world or the one. Every update, every ganged-up, arm-over-the-shoulder beach photo shouts a version of well-being, or imbalance, or casual contentment. Comment boxes accompany every decision, every observation, and there’s an audience for them, too. The whole thing is a tissue of manipulations. So, it’s safe to say, if it’s a movie about Facebook, you know very quickly that someone is screwing with someone else.
Initially the documentary Catfish unfolds like a benign Facebook journey featuring acute shots of cursor movements, accepted friend requests, close-up profile pictures, snippets of late-night texting. A young photographer, Nev Schulman, is being filmed by his buddies as he comes to know a child, then her mother, then a beautiful older sister, first as Facebook friends, then through the standard mash of long-distance communications — U. S. mail, text-messaging, late-night cell-phone calls. On one end, there’s Schulman, good-looking, obtuse, a little too eager, who mostly seems to feel charmed by the event. On the other end, a cast of beautiful, oddly hip Wasps, introduced quickly as a series of striking profile pictures. Schulman wants to like the kid (Abby), admire the mother (Angela), romance the sister (Megan), going fairly far down that last road, to the point where he is giddy with lust, driven to see the woman. It’s easy to assume that a veil of text-fueled, voice-mail-soaked creepiness will descend, and someone will turn out to be someone they’re not.
Of course, our lives are uncaptioned, our faces untagged. Real friendships are made, not requested !!!
